Within the framework of the Mexico-European Union Forum on Circular Economy, which was held from May 17 to 19 in the city of Chihuahua, organized by the Delegation of the European Union in Mexico, in coordination with COPARMEX Chihuahua, the State Government, the Municipality of Chihuahua and Low Carbon Bussines Action Mexico, the results of the Industrial Symbiosis pilot project “Chihuahua Green City” were presented. The Ambassador of the European Union in Mexico, Mr. Gautier Mignot, underlined the particular interest of the northern states of Mexico, such as Chihuahua, in fostering exchanges with European experts, and promoting the results of the pilot study, which was financed with European funds and which is expected to serve as an example for other municipalities and states in Mexico. He highlighted the relevance of choosing Chihuahua as the venue for the dialogue between Mexico and the E.U. on the perspectives, challenges and opportunities to promote the transition towards a circular economic model. In this sense, he recognized the dynamism of the business sector of the city of Chihuahua, which is emerging as a regional HUB of circular practices, for which he said that the extension of the project will be carried out to follow up on the companies that already participate. Verónica Kuchinow, an expert who developed the methodology with local companies, was in charge of presenting the phases of the project and the results to representatives of the business, government and social sectors. She explained that there is an important opportunity for companies that have never worked together and have never thought that they can do business with each other for greater competitiveness. She added that, during seven months of hard work, it was possible to identify more than 230 companies from Chihuahua and the region, of which 46 are already part of the project; in general, 80 opportunities were detected, of which 7 were prioritized. These are: Recycling of plastics (packaging); reuse of reclaimed water (wastewater treatment plant); Bioeconomy HUB (biomaterials), and Bioenergy HUB (biomass, biogas); shared energy manager (heat and cold network); recovery of tires out of use (pyrolysis, materials); recycling of electrical and electronic equipment waste; and use of construction and demolition waste.
